What is Shiatsu Therapy?

Shiatsu is a Japanese therapy designed to stimulate the body's inherent ability to heal itself, based on the same principles as acupuncture (but without the needles), the literal translation is "finger pressure". Shiatsu incorporates Anma (traditional Japanese massage), Acupressure and stretching. Finger, thumb, palm and elbow pressure is applied to specific points along the body in a rhythmic, slow pace. The amount of pressure can be very deep or very light depending on the client's condition.

Shiatsu treatments have a regulatory influence on the autonomic nervous system, thereby improving organ function and reducing muscle tension.

What to expect

A medical history is taken on your first visit, progress and changes are recorded on each subsequent visit. The treatment will be performed on a low treatment table.  The client may wear loose comfortable clothing or be covered with a sheet. Traditionally no oil is used during treatment, your therapist can include oil for a Shiatsu blend if requested.

Shiatsu is a deeply relaxing form of therapy, many people drift asleep during treatment. After treatment most people experience increased range of motion in the joints and deeper more restful sleep for several nights. A small percentage of people may experience some fatigue and headache for a few hours, or temporarily feel minor localized muscle stiffness, this is a normal healing process and will pass within 1 to 3 days.

Shiatsu can be an important part of a preventative or rehabilitative health care program, treatments can be weekly, bi-weekly or monthly.
